U.S. Stocks Rise; Stocks in China Drop After Long Holiday

First Look

U.S. stocks are pointed toward a rise at ahead of Monday's opening bell. Stocks in mainland China re-opened with steep declines yesterday after a Lunar New Year Holiday that was extended by efforts to contain the coronavirus. The coronavirus meanwhile continues to spread, with the number of infected continuing to rise, while the first death outside of China was reported in the Philipines. The Nasdaq is up 0.5%, the S&P 500 is up 0.43%, the Dow Jones is up 0.4%.

Stocks on the Move

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (GILD), Seagate Technology PLC (STX) and Ulta Beauty Inc (ULTA) are moving higher this morning, while NortonLifeLock Inc (NLOK), L Brands Inc (LB) and CDW common stock (CDW) are headed lower. Celanese Corporation (CE), Nike Inc (NKE) and Colgate-Palmolive Company (CL) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Crispr Therapeutics AG (CRSP), Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.34%, the Hang Seng is up 0.17%, the Nikkei 225 is down -1.01% the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -1.42% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -7.72%. In Europe stocks are up. The FTSE 100 is up 0.4%, the CAC 40 is up 0.17%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.16% and the DAX is up 0.13%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.03 at 51.53 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.45 at 56.17 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.03 at 1.87. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -3.7 at 1584.2 per ounce. Platinum is down -4.47 at 956.57 while silver is down -0.21 at 17.81. The dollar is up compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, up against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,455,906 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 1,075,920 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.74.
