Stocks Fall as Virus Fears Rise

First Look

Stocks in the U.S. are sliding Thursday morning as fears about the effects of coronavirus on the world economy are growing. A number of companies have limited or suspended Chinese operations as part of an effort to help stop the virus from spreading. The Nasdaq is down -0.62%, the Dow Jones is down -0.71%, the S&P 500 is down -0.77%.

Stocks on the Move

Qorvo Inc (QRVO), ServiceNow Inc (NOW) and Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) are moving higher this morning, while Facebook, Inc. Common Stock (FB), Carnival Corp (CCL) and Aptiv PLC (APTV) are headed lower. Stitch Fix Inc (SFIX), Hess Corp. (HES) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while AT&T Inc. (T), Sprouts Farmers Market Inc (SFM) and Facebook, Inc. Common Stock (FB) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Shanghai SE Composite Index is flat 0%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.38%, the Mumbai Sensex is down -0.69% the Nikkei 225 is down -1.72% and the Hang Seng is down -2.62%. Stocks in Europe are down. The CAC 40 is down -1.52%, the FTSE 100 is down -1.43%, the DAX is down -1.3% and the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -1.29%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are down today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -1.03 at 52.3 per barrel. Brent crude is down -1.26 at 58.55 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.03 at 1.84. Precious metals are mixed this morning. Gold is up 1.44 at 1578.27 per ounce. Platinum is down -2.77 at 974.5 while silver is up 0.27 at 17.76. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,607,150 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 799,003 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.5.
