Morning Update: Stocks Rise as Tech Companies Begin Reporting

First Look

Stocks are pointed higher before the open Tuesday. Twitter (TWTR) is up 6.8% in the pre-market to start a big week for tech companies reporting quarterly earnings. Amazon.com (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Microsoft (MSFT) and Tesla (TSLA) are all scheduled to report later this week. Oil continues higher following the Trump administration’s decision to not renew waivers on countries purchasing Iranian oil. The Dow Jones is up 0.2%, the Nasdaq is up 0.05%, the S&P 500 is up 0.04%.

Stocks on the Move

Hasbro, Inc. (HAS), Twitter Inc (TWTR) and Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) are moving higher this morning, while Waters Corporation (WAT), Hormel Foods Corp (HRL) and AFLAC Incorporated (AFL) are headed lower. QUALCOMM, Inc. (QCOM), Boston Properties, Inc. (BXP) and Aspen Technology, Inc. (AZPN) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Regions Financial Corp (RF), Hormel Foods Corp (HRL) and Arista Networks Inc (ANET) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.96%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.19%, the Hang Seng is flat, the Mumbai Sensex is down -0.21% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.51%. In Europe stocks are mixed. The FTSE 100 is up 0.46%, the CAC 40 is down -0.14%, the DAX is down -0.23% and the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.26%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.11 at 65.66 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.04 at 74.08 per barrel. Natural Gas is flat at 2.53. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -2.94 at 1272.05 per ounce. Platinum is down -11.18 at 887.08 while silver is down -0.09 at 14.97. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 966,506 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 578,253 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.6 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.61.
