First Look
Markets are down ahead of the opening bell Thursday morning. The Nasdaq is slightly higher in the pre-market after Apple (AAPL) and Facebook (FB) reported quarterly earnings that topped analysts' expectations. The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by a quarter-point Wednesday. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said in a news conference that monetary policy is "appropriate", casting doubts about the likelihood of further cuts. Also casting doubts, are Chinese officials, who are reportedly increasingly skeptical about the possibilities of a long-term, comprehensive trade deal with the U.S. Both sides seem to still be working toward the so-called Phase One agreement, but Chile yesterday canceled the summit where that deal was supposed to be signed. The Nasdaq is down -0.22%, the Dow Jones is down -0.3%, the S&P 500 is down -0.33%.
