Stocks Rise Tuesday Afternoon as Producer Prices Cool; Walmart, Home Depot Rise Following Earnings

During trading Tuesday, 26 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 26 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 1.06% so far today while the Dow is up 0.3%, the Nasdaq is up 1.75%, and the Russell 2000 is up 1.72%.

Stocks remain higher Tuesday afternoon after paring gains as geopolitical uncertainty grew following a Russian missile that landed in Poland, killing two people.

Giving stocks their initial boost today was a better-than-expected Producer Price Index report. PPI rose 0.2% against estimates for a sharper 0.5% rise, while core prices remained unchanged against projections for a 0.4% rise. Encouragingly, unprocessed goods for intermediate demand plunged 11.7% month-over-month, while processed goods cooled by 0.2%.

Walmart Inc (WMT) is up 7.69% after a strong earnings report. The company topped estimates and raised its outlook as inventory issues improved. Additionally, Sam's Club, the company's Costco rival, saw comps surge 10%.

Lastly, Home Depot Inc (HD) is up 2.02% after topping estimates and reaffirming full-year 2023 earnings guidance. Despite inflation and a cooling housing market, Home Depot maintained strong home improvement demand.
