Stocks Higher Thursday as Consumer Prices Fall

During trading Thursday, 75 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 14 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.55% so far today while the Dow is up 0.78%, the Nasdaq is up 0.7%, and the Russell 2000 is up 1.5%.

Stocks are higher Thursday afternoon. Stocks whipsawed after opening today following a mixed CPI reading. On a year-over-year basis, headline CPI fell to 6.5% from 7.1%, while core CPI declined to 5.7% from 6.0%. While the report was generally good, the services index showed prices in the largest sector of the economy increased by 0.6% in December after rising 0.3% in November.

Weekly jobless claims were lower than expected, coming in at 205,000 claims against estimates of 210,000 claims. With claims keeping consistently low, it leaves room for the Fed to continue raising rates as the central bank remains keen on limiting wage inflation.

Lastly, American Airlines Group Inc (AAL) is rising 8.83% following a strong earnings report by the airline. American Airlines topped earnings and revenue estimates while raising its fourth-quarter earnings and revenue guidance. US Global Jets ETF (JETS) is up 4.1% following the report as airlines soar in sympathy with the news.
