Core PPI Rises 1.0%; Industrial and Finance Stocks Dominate Highs Thursday

During trading Thursday, 132 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 63 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.1% so far today while the Dow is down 0.13%, the Nasdaq is up 0.08%, and the Russell 2000 is down 0.38%.

Markets are mixed Thursday afternoon after new inflation was released. Core Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 1.0% in July, higher than analysts estimates for a smaller 0.5% increase and equivalent to June’s rise of 1.0% as well. Meanwhile, initial unemployment claims fell slightly more than expected with a drop from 385,000 to 375,000 claims, economists had expected a smaller decrease to 383,000. Lastly, shares of Palantir Technologies (PLTR) are up 11% today after reporting better than expected earnings and revenue with an EPS of $0.04 and total revenue of $375 million.

Sector Highlights

Industrials stocks dominated our list of highs today with 36 out of the 132 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Industrials sector. The Industrials sector is underperforming the market, decreasing 0.3% so far on the day. Over the last month the Industrials sector has outperformed the market, increasing 1.91% while the S&P increased 1.79%.

Industrial stocks once again leads the list of 52-week highs despite the sector being lower for the day and just barely outperforming the overall market the past month. The recent infrastructure proposal has sent some stocks to new highs though as certain areas receive large funding from the bill.

Financial Services had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 33 out of 132 highs coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is outperforming the market today, increasing 0.14% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has outperformed the market, increasing 5.58% while the S&P increased 1.79%.

Finance stocks have the second most highs Thursday as the sector continues to soar with it trading nearly 6% higher the past month as the economy recovers and a new infrastructure bill is proposed.
