Stocks Mixed Thursday: BLMN, CAKE, AFL, BC Lead New Highs

During trading Thursday, 350 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 5 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.46% so far today while the Dow is up 0.38%, the Nasdaq is up 0.1%, and the Russell 2000 is down 0.74%.

Stocks are mixed Thursday afternoon in a choppy day of trading after reaching record highs earlier in the day. Stocks started the day off advancing across the board following better than expected earnings reports, including from tech giants Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), and Qualcomm (QCOM). GDP grew at an annualized rate of 6.4% from the final quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021. Additionally, President Biden announced a stimulus plan target at American families worth $1.8 trillion.

Sector Highlights

Financial Services stocks dominated our list of highs today with 82 out of the 350 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is outperforming the market, increasing 1.4% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 4.34% while the S&P increased 5.25%.

Aflac (AFL) is on highs after smashing earnings estimates, reporting earnings of $1.53 per share on estimates for $1.21 per share. Meanwhile, Cullen/Frost (CFR) also comfortably beat earnings this morning, reporting earnings of $1.77 per share on estimates of $1.45. Lastly, Carlyle Group (CG) beat earnings, reporting $0.58 per share on estimates for $0.50 and declaring its quarterly dividend at $0.25 per common share held to holders of record on May 11, 2021, with payments going out on May 19, 2021.

The Consumer Cyclical sector is underperforming the market today, decreasing 0.03% so far on the day. Over the last month the Consumer Cyclical sector has outperformed the market, increasing 7.89% while the S&P increased 5.25%.

Bunswick (BC) is on highs after raising its quarterly dividend to $0.335/share from $0.27 per share. Meanwhile, Bloomin’ Brands (BLMN) is on highs after smashing earnings, reporting $0.72 per share on estimates for $0.32 per share. Lastly, the Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) managed a surprise profit, reporting profits of $0.20 per share on estimates of a loss of $0.06 per share.
