BioNTech (BNTX) and Pfizer (PFE) Stocks Both Up; Request EU Regulator to Expand COVID-19 Vaccine to Youth

What’s going on with BNTX?

BioNTech (BNTX), which collaborated with Pfizer Inc. (PFE) to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, is asking for an amendment by the European Union's regulatory body to permit use of the vaccine in children ages 12 to 15 years old. Shares of BNTX were up 4.35% to $187.47, while PFE shares were up 0.10% to $38.64 on Friday morning.

If the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approves the request, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will be allowed for use in adolescents and valid in all 27 EU nations. The two companies have submitted a similar request before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and plan to request further variations with regulatory entities.

What does it mean BioNTech?

The request for expanded use in teens comes after BioNTech reported favorable topline results observed in a Phase 3 clinical trial. The vaccine was 100% effective and well-tolerated in more than 2,260 participants in the trial, ages 12 to 15 years old.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was created on BioNTech’s proprietary mRNA technology and developed with Pfizer.
