US stocks were sharply higher ahead of the close Thursday as strong bank earnings and a pandemic-low drop in initial jobless claims, as well as cooling producer price inflation, lifted market sentiment.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.4% to 34,861.39, with S&P 500 higher by 1.6% at 4,432.61 and the Nasdaq Composite was up by 1.6% to 14,807.50. Technology and materials led the sectors, which were all in the green.

The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 3.7 basis points to 1.51%.
