US stocks closed mixed as shares of Amazon (AMZN) dropped following a negative note from Citi. Stocks were advancing for most of the session on Friday, recovering from three straight days of losses, as retail spending in September picked up more than expected amid an impasse in talks over a stimulus package for the stalled economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.86% to 28,622.72. The S&P 500 added 0.1% to 3,486.35, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.3%, to 11,676.33.
