Trade Developments Send Stocks Higher Thursday

First Look

Stocks are higher in the pre-market Thursday morning following recent developments in trade negotiations between the U.S. and China. China's Ministry of Commerce spokesman, Gao Feng, said both sides have agreed to roll back tariffs in phases as part of a "phase one" trade deal. Feng said it is "an important condition" that both countries remove duties equally at the same time. China also announced additional efforts to fight the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. after the country sentenced three people to maximum punishments for smuggling the drug into the U.S. The Dow Jones is up 0.5%, the Nasdaq is up 0.48%, the S&P 500 is up 0.37%.

Stocks on the Move

QUALCOMM, Inc. (QCOM), DENTSPLY SIRONA Inc (XRAY) and Fiserv Inc (FISV) are moving higher this morning, while Expedia Group Inc (EXPE), Tripadvisor Inc Common Stock (TRIP) and Booking Holdings Inc (BKNG) are headed lower. Vistra Energy Corp (VST), Quotient Technology Inc (QUOT) and Match Group Inc (MTCH) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Twitter Inc (TWTR), Papa John's Int'l, Inc. (PZZA) and Diamondback Energy Inc (FANG) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.94%, the Hang Seng is up 0.57%, the Mumbai Sensex is up 0.45% the Nikkei 225 is up 0.11% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is flat 0%. In Europe stocks are up. The DAX is up 0.71%, the FTSE 100 is up 0.32%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.3% and the CAC 40 is up 0.2%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.81 at 57.16 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.79 at 62.53 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.04 at 2.79. Precious metals are mixed this morning. Gold is down -5.49 at 1485.08 per ounce. Platinum is up 2.06 at 931.67 while silver is down -0.05 at 17.55. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,461,842 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 1,098,240 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.75 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.67.
