Stocks Tick Lower Despite China Quarantine

First Look

Stocks in the U.S. are pointed toward a modest decline at the open Thursday. China said yesterday it will quarantine the province of Wuhan to try to stop a corona virus outbreak. Shares of Comcast (CMCSA) are at an all-time high ahead of the opening bell after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly results. The Nasdaq is up 0.01%, the S&P 500 is down -0.12%, the Dow Jones is down -0.2%.

Stocks on the Move

L Brands Inc (LB), Citrix Systems, Inc. (CTXS) and Western Digital Corp (WDC) are moving higher this morning, while VF Corp (VFC), Wynn Resorts, Limited (WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) are headed lower. Chevron Corporation (CVX), General Electric Company (GE) and Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Tesla Inc (TSLA), Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) and Wayfair Inc (W) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.66%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.69%, the Nikkei 225 is down -0.98% the Hang Seng is down -1.52% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -2.75%. Stocks in Europe are down. The DAX is down -0.43%, the FTSE 100 is down -0.35%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.27% and the CAC 40 is down -0.09%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.98 at 55.76 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.96 at 62.25 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.06 at 1.96. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -3.52 at 1555.26 per ounce. Platinum is down -9.66 at 1005.57 while silver is down -0.16 at 17.67. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, down against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,510,824 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 783,164 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.52.
