Stocks Rise as New Cases Decline in New York

First Look

Stocks around the world are higher Monday morning and futures in the U.S. are indicating a positive open for U.S. equity markets. The optimism is largely around New York state reporting a decline in coronavirus fatalities for the first time yesterday. Automakers and travel-related stocks are among those posting the biggest gains in Europe.  The Dow Jones is up 3.72%, the S&P is up 3.68%, the Nasdaq is up 3.63%.

Stocks on the Move

Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (HP), Truist Financial Corp (TFC) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) are moving higher this morning, while Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL), Southwest Airlines Co (LUV) and Apache Corporation (APA) are headed lower. Webster Financial Corporation (WBS), Schlumberger Limited. (SLB) and National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NOV) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Steven Madden, Ltd. (SHOO), Northern Trust Corporation (NTRS) and Gannett Co Inc (GCI) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 4.24%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 4.24%, the Hang Seng is up 2.21% the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.6% and the Mumbai Sensex is down -2.39%. In Europe stocks are up. The DAX is up 4.7%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 4.02%, the CAC 40 is up 3.7% and the FTSE 100 is up 2.12%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.78 at 27.56 per barrel. Brent crude is down -1.01 at 33.1 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.04 at 1.66. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 19.84 at 1640.65 per ounce. Platinum is up 8.8 at 733.93 while silver is up 0.36 at 14.86. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, up against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,046,277 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 868,724 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.83.
