Stocks Rise as China Considers Boosting Economy

First Look

Futures trading indicates a higher open for U.S. stocks Wednesday. China indicated it is considering additional measures to boost its economy after lower interest rates and providing additional funding for banks earlier in the week. New measures under consideration include aid for the airline industry, which is struggling due to travel restrictions meant to help contain the covid-19 virus. The Nasdaq is up 0.42%, the Dow Jones is up 0.29%, the S&P 500 is up 0.27%.

Stocks on the Move

Garmin Ltd. (GRMN), Leidos Holdings Inc (LDOS) and Diamondback Energy Inc (FANG) are moving higher this morning, while NextEra Energy Inc (NEE), Harley-Davidson Inc (HOG) and Dow Inc (DOW) are headed lower. Man Group Ltd (MNGPF), and NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Transocean LTD (RIG), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) and NetApp Inc. (NTAP) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 1.05%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.896%, the Hang Seng is up 0.46% the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.4% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.32%. In Europe stocks are up. The FTSE 100 is up 0.7%, the CAC 40 is up 0.61%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.53% and the DAX is up 0.51%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.71 at 52.76 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.81 at 58.56 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.03 at 1.95. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 6.35 at 1607.96 per ounce. Platinum is up 17.17 at 1009.73 while silver is up 0.19 at 18.35. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,475,246 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 751,922 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.51.
