Morning Update: Stocks Rise as May Steps Down

First Look

Stocks are pointing to a higher open. British Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation Friday after facing backlash against her recent Brexit deal. May has failed on three separate occasions to win Parliamentary approval for the exit deal she negotiated with the European Union. May stated that she will stepping down from her position as Conservative Party leader on June 7, while staying on as prime minister until a successor has been chosen. The Dow Jones is up 0.54%, the S&P 500 is up 0.53%, the Nasdaq is up 0.42%.

Stocks on the Move

Total System Services, Inc. (TSS), HP Inc (HPQ) and Centurylink Inc (CTL) are moving higher this morning, while Fastenal Company (FAST), NetApp Inc. (NTAP) and QUALCOMM, Inc. (QCOM) are headed lower. Vodafone Group Plc (VOD ), Vale SA (VALE) and Dow Inc (DOW) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Weibo Corp (WB), Constellation Brands, Inc. Class A (STZ) and Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 1.61%, the Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.48%, the Hang Seng is up 0.32% the Nikkei 225 is down -0.16% and the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.59%. Stocks in Europe are down. The CAC 40 is down -1.5%, the CAC 40 is down -1.5%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -1.43% and the FTSE 100 is down -1.24%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.66 at 58.57 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.8 at 68.56 per barrel. Natural Gas is flat at 2.58. Precious metals are mixed this morning. Gold is down -0.65 at 1282.8 per ounce. Platinum is up 7.79 at 807.39 while silver is down -0.06 at 14.56. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 988,866 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 791,748 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.8 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.68.
