Morning Update: Markets Mixed on Earnings Results

First Look

Markets are mixed before the bell Thursday. The Nasdaq is higher by 0.9% in the pre-market, after both Facebook (FB) and Microsoft (MSFT) posted earnings beats. Shares of FB stock are up 8.8% and MSFT stock are higher by 4.9%. The oil rally sparked by U.S. pressure on Iran has stalled due to a spike in onshore inventories in the U.S. The Nasdaq is up 0.32%, the S&P 500 is up 0.07%, the Dow Jones is down -0.32%.

Stocks on the Move

Facebook, Inc. Common Stock (FB), Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) and International Paper Co (IP) are moving higher this morning, while Xilinx, Inc. (XLNX), 3M Co (MMM) and Altria Group Inc (MO) are headed lower. Facebook, Inc. Common Stock (FB), American Express Company (AXP) and Wynn Resorts, Limited (WYNN) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Xilinx, Inc. (XLNX), Hasbro, Inc. (HAS) and Tesla Inc (TSLA) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.93%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.48%, the Mumbai Sensex is down -0.83% the Hang Seng is down -0.87% and the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -2.43%. Stocks in Europe are down. The FTSE 100 is down -0.51%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.27%, the CAC 40 is down -0.2% and the DAX is down -0.09%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.23 at 66.12 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.63 at 75.2 per barrel. Natural Gas is flat at 2.47. Precious metals are mixed this morning. Gold is up 0.64 at 1276.4 per ounce. Platinum is down -3.86 at 880.24 while silver is flat at 14.91. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, down against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,001,346 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 596,515 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.6 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.61.
