Morning Update: Markets mixed Monday

First Look

Markets are mixed ahead of the open Monday morning. Elected officials are working on a new deal to fund the government as the short-term deal that ended the longest shutdown in history ends on Feb. 15. President Donald Trump is scheduled to give the State of the Union address tomorrow, where he could possibly declare a national emergency to start building the border wall without approved government funding. The Nasdaq is up 0.1%, the S&P 500 is up 0.09%, the Dow Jones is up 0.08%.

Stocks on the Move

Clorox Co (CLX), Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (BMY) and Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ALXN) are moving higher this morning, while Celgene Corporation (CELG), Marriott International Inc (MAR) and Constellation Brands, Inc. Class A (STZ) are headed lower. ConocoPhillips (COP), Aon PLC (AON) and Intuit Inc. (INTU) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while SAP SE (SAP), KeyCorp (KEY) and AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (AVEO) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are up. The Shanghai Stock Exchange is closed for the Lunar New Year, the Mumbai Sensex is up 0.59%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.47% the Nikkei 225 is up 0.46% and the Hang Seng is up 0.21%. In Europe stocks are mixed. The FTSE 100 is up 0.28%, the DAX is down -0.2%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.41% and the CAC 40 is down -0.52%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are down today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.37 at 54.89 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.25 at 62.5 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.03 at 2.7. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -7 at 1315.1 per ounce. Platinum is down -8.43 at 815.74 while silver is down -0.23 at 15.7. The dollar is up compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, up against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,114,041 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 671,624 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.60 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.63.
