Markets Rise Thursday as Trade Talks Continue

First Look

Markets are slightly higher ahead of the opening bell Thursday. According to the Wall Street Journal, China's top trade negotiator, Vice Premier Lui He, has invited U.S. officials to Beijing to continue ongoing trade negotiations, adding that he is "cautiously optimistic" about the possibility of a phase-one deal being reached. President Trump is expected to sign the recently passed congressional legislation supporting protesters in Hong Kong, renewing concerns that the bill could impede the ongoing trade talks between the U.S. and China. The S&P 500 is down -0.02%, the S&P 500 is down -0.02%, the Nasdaq is down -0.09%.

Stocks on the Move

Charles Schwab Corporation Common Stock (SCHW), L Brands Inc (LB) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF) are moving higher this morning, while Macy's Inc (M), E*TRADE Financial Corp (ETFC) and Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) are headed lower. Titan Mining Corp (TI), Royal Bank of Canada (RY) and Duke Energy Corp (DUK) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) and Carnival Corp (CCL) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are down. The Hang Seng is down -1.54%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.74%, the Nikkei 225 is down -0.48% the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.25% and the Mumbai Sensex is down -0.19%.Stocks in Europe are down. The FTSE 100 is down -1.06%, the DAX is down -0.74%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.53% and the CAC 40 is down -0.4%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.25 at 57.26 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.18 at 62.58 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.01 at 2.55. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -3.88 at 1467.73 per ounce. Platinum is down -1.58 at 915.71 while silver is down -0.01 at 17.21. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,387,008 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 1,104,812 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.8 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.67.
