First Look
Stocks are mixed before the opening bell Wednesday. It's another big day for earnings, with many major companies posting quarterly results. Caterpillar (CAT), which is often viewed as a bellwether stock for both the domestic and global economy, is down 1.1% in the pre-market after missing on both top and bottom lines. Caterpillar also issued downside earnings and revenue guidance for fiscal year 2019. Shares of Anthem (ANTM) are up 1.4% after the company beat both EPS and revenue estimates, while Boeing (BA) stock is higher by 0.9% despite missing on earnings-per-share expectations and reporting revenue in line with estimates. Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) beat on both top and bottom lines, but is lower by 1.9% in the pre-market, while shares of Texas Instruments (TXN) fell 8.2% after earnings misses. iRobot (IRBT) stock is down 16.9% after the company cut forward guidance but beating revenue and EPS estimates by a wide margin. The Nasdaq is down -0.14%, the Dow Jones is down -0.17%, the S&P 500 is down -0.19%.

Invesco Ltd. (IVZ), Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) and Biogen Inc (BIIB) are moving higher this morning, while Texas Instruments Incorporated (TXN), Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) and Eli Lilly And Co (LLY) are headed lower. Snap Inc (SNAP), Coca-Cola Co (KO) and Biogen Inc (BIIB) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Halliburton Company (HAL), Kohl's Corporation (KSS) and Papa John's Int'l, Inc. (PZZA) were downgraded.

In Europe stocks are mixed. The FTSE 100 is up 0.23%, the DAX is down -0.05%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.43% and the CAC 40 is down -0.59%.

Energy futures are down today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.56 at 53.92 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.46 at 59.24 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.01 at 2.27. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 5.67 at 1493.35 per ounce. Platinum is up 2.37 at 893.95 while silver is up 0.05 at 17.55. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Yesterday, 903,105 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 604,220 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.67 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.67.
