Markets Higher on Big Earnings Day

First Look

Major indices are pointed higher ahead of the open Tuesday. It’s a big day on the earnings calendar, with many big-name companies submitting quarterly reports today. Harley-Davidson (HOG) is up 6.5% in the pre-market after beating revenue and earnings per share estimates. Proctor and Gamble (PG) stock is higher by 4.6% after beating both top and bottom lines. McDonald's (MCD) is down 3.4% and Hasbro (HAS) is lower by 12.3% ahead of the bell after missing earnings per share expectations. United Parcel Service (UPS) is down 3.8% in the pre-market despite an EPS beat and revenues in-line with analyst estimates. Snap Inc. (SNAP) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) are both scheduled to report today after the bell. British Parliament will be voting on new legislation for Brexit. Should the bill pass a parliamentary vote today, the House of Commons will have to vote for final approval before sending the measure to the Lords ahead of the October 31 deadline. The Nasdaq is up 0.27%, the S&P 500 is up 0.11%, the Dow Jones is up 0.09%.

Stocks on the Move

Biogen Inc (BIIB), Harley-Davidson Inc (HOG) and Procter & Gamble Co (PG) are moving higher this morning, while Hasbro, Inc. (HAS), United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) and Travelers Companies Inc (TRV) are headed lower. Bank of America Corp (BAC), Workday Inc (WDAY) and Dropbox Inc (DBX) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), Intuit Inc. (INTU) and Textron Inc. (TXT) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.51%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.31%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.25% the Hang Seng is up 0.23% and the Mumbai Sensex is down -0.85%. In Europe stocks are up. The FTSE 100 is up 0.45%, the DAX is up 0.19%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.15% and the CAC 40 is up 0.11%.

Futures & Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.26 at 53.57 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.19 at 59.15 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.01 at 2.25. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 2 at 1490.1 per ounce. Platinum is up 1.6 at 890.17 while silver is up 0.04 at 17.64. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is up against the euro, down against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 828,076 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 613,123 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.74 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.67.
