Markets Flat Before the Open

Wednesday, July 17, 2019 08:37 AM | Brad Spears

First Look

Major indices are flat in the pre-market Wednesday. As U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer plan to resume trade talks with Chinese officials via telephone this week, President Trump reminded the Chinese government that he could impose additional tariffs on $325 billion in Chinese goods if he needs to. Chinese officials responded to the threat, stating that additional tariffs would impede progress on trade negotiations, which are just beginning to get back on track. President Trump also reiterated his stance that China had promised to purchase additional agricultural products as part of the deal made at the G-20 summit. China has not confirmed or denied such a claim, but has actually purchased less U.S. farm products since the G-20 summit in late June. The Nasdaq is up 0.13%, the S&P 500 is up 0.07%, the Dow Jones is up 0.06%.
