Technology and Finance Stocks Lead 52-Week Highs Wednesday

During trading Wednesday, 46 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 29 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.3% so far today while the Dow is up 0.01%, the Nasdaq is up 0.64%, and the Russell 2000 is up 0.3%.

Markets are higher Wednesday late in trading after being mixed earlier in the day. CPI numbers were slightly higher than expected with a 0.4% increase in September compared to estimates for 0.3%. However, core CPI rose less than expected with a smaller 0.2% jump versus the similar 0.3% estimated rise. JPMorgan Chase (JPM) stock is down 2.5% today after the bank surpassed earnings estimates but was primarily driven by a tax benefit and credit reserve releases.

Technology stocks dominated our list of highs today with 14 out of the 46 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Technology sector. The Technology sector is outperforming the market, increasing 0.49% so far on the day. Over the last month the Technology sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 3.84% while the S&P decreased 2.42%.

Tech stocks have the most highs Wednesday as the sector is trading up today but still down nearly 4% overall the past month as investors have been moving to energy stocks and others to benefit from the reopen trade.

Financial Services had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 6 out of 46 highs coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is outperforming the market today, decreasing 0.77% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has outperformed the market, increasing 2.75% while the S&P decreased 2.42%.

Finance stocks have the second most highs today leading into many of the big six banks reporting earnings tomorrow and following JPMorgan’s earnings beat today.
