Markets Mixed to End Week; Industrials Lead 52-Week Highs

During trading Friday, 298 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 10 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.3% so far today while the Dow is up 0.41%, the Nasdaq is down 0.04%, and the Russell 2000 is up 0.14%.

Markets are mixed Friday to end the first week of earnings season which consisted mostly of financial institutions. Morgan Stanley (MS) surpassed earnings and revenue estimates this morning but that did not stop its stock from sliding over 3% after reporting a $911 million loss from the Archegos Capital Management collapse. PNC Financial Services (PNC) also reported better than expected earnings before market open today and its stock is up 2% so far.

Sector Highlights

Industrials stocks dominated our list of highs today with 59 out of the 298 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Industrials sector. The Industrials sector is underperforming the market, increasing 0.17% so far on the day. Over the last month the Industrials sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 4.53% while the S&P increased 5.76%.

Industrial stocks continue to hit annual highs as traders move to the previously lagging sector before the vaccines were distributed a such a high rate.

Financial Services had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 53 out of 298 highs coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is outperforming the market today, increasing 0.47% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has underperformed the market, increasing 1.37% while the S&P increased 5.76%.

Finance stocks remain in the top two for highs even with more modest gains over the past week. Most banks reported better than expected earnings but tempered expectations of a return to “normal” so fast as a result of the vaccine, additionally reported losses from the Archegos fallout hurt some of the largest firms.
