Markets Mixed Monday as Energy and Industrial Stocks Lead Highs

During trading Monday, 54 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 43 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.19% so far today while the Dow is up 0.71%, the Nasdaq is up 0.09%, and the Russell 2000 is up 0.69%.

Stock highs just barely outpace 52-week lows Monday coming off last week’s poor trading which saw the major indices report losses each day. Energy stocks are the big winners today as crude oil continues its gains and managed to reach a six week high. Meanwhile, the healthcare sector is down the most of the sectors so far Monday.

Sector Highlights

Industrials stocks dominated our list of highs today with 14 out of the 54 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Industrials sector. The Industrials sector is underperforming the market, decreasing 0.09% so far on the day. Over the last month the Industrials sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 1.77% while the S&P increased 0.5%.

Industrial stocks have the most highs today despite the sector trading slightly lower for the day and has underperformed the market over the past month.

Energy had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 13 out of 54 highs coming from the Energy sector. The Energy sector is outperforming the market today, increasing 3.01% so far on the day. Over the last month the Energy sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 4.49% while the S&P increased 0.5%.

Energy stocks managed to grab the second most highs Monday as the sector is up big today following a rough trading performance in early to mid August. Crude oil is higher as OPEC expects fuel consumption to continue rising.
