Healthcare Dominates 52-Week Lows as Lows Far Outpace Highs Thursday

During trading Thursday, 8 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 310 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 1.5% so far today while the Dow is up 1.85%, the Nasdaq is up 0.66%, and the Russell 2000 is up 1.97%.

Stocks are higher Thursday as initial unemployment claims rose from 194,000 claims to 222,000. The rise in claims was far less than expected however as economists estimates hovered around 255,000 and the previous week’s claims were revised down slightly from 199,000 to 194,000 claims. Additionally, 194,000 set a new 52-week low and this past week’s numbers were right in line with the average right before the pandemic struck. Lastly, shares of Kroger (KR) are over 12% higher following the grocery store retailer’s earnings beat and jump in sales outlook going forward.

Sector Highlights

Technology stocks dominated our list of highs today with 2 out of the 8 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Technology sector. The Technology sector is underperforming the market, increasing 0.71% so far on the day. Over the last month the Technology sector has outperformed the market, increasing 1.3% while the S&P decreased 1.05%.

Tech stocks are tied with Financial Services and Real Estate for the most highs Thursday with 2 stocks a piece hitting new peaks as the lows far outweigh highs today with markets trending lower since the Omicron variant was discovered.


The Healthcare sector makes up the majority of our 52-week lows, as 110 out of our 310 lows comes from the Healthcare sector. The Healthcare sector is underperforming the market today, increasing 0.59% so far on the day. Over the last month the Healthcare sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 3.04% while the S&P decreased 1.05%.

Healthcare stocks have by far the most lows Thursday with the sector accounting for over a third of total markets lows set today. Overall, the sector has signficantly underperformed the market recently with the Omicron variant dragging many stocks to new lows as a result.
