Finance and Energy Stocks Lead 52-Week Highs Monday

During trading Monday, 139 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 89 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is down 0.39% so far today while the Dow is down 0.55%, the Nasdaq is down 0.24%, and the Russell 2000 is up 0.06%.

Markets are lower late during trading on Monday. Goldman Sachs lowered growth forecasts for the United States as the recovery in consumer spending has delayed. Meanwhile, oil prices have hit a seven year high with WTI crude rising above $80 per barrel. Additionally, aluminum prices have hit a thirteen year high as the global energy crisis continues with production being hit but demand remaining high.

Financial Services stocks dominated our list of highs today with 54 out of the 139 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is underperforming the market, decreasing 0.77% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has outperformed the market, increasing 1.83% while the S&P decreased 3.18%.

Finance stocks have the most highs during trading on Monday ahead of many of the world’s largest financial institutions reporting quarterly earnings this week.

Energy had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 39 out of 139 highs coming from the Energy sector. The Energy sector is outperforming the market today, decreasing 0.05% so far on the day. Over the last month the Energy sector has outperformed the market, increasing 18.02% while the S&P decreased 3.18%.

Energy stocks have the second most highs Monday as the energy crisis continues with production unable to meet demand in many countries around the world. Thus, the energy sector has skyrocketed in price, rising over 18% the past month.
