ALL, BRK.B, BERY and OI Among New Highs As Financials, Consumer Cyclicals Lead

During trading Monday, 194 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 12 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is up 0.42% so far today while the Dow is up 0.84%, the Nasdaq is down 0.35%, and the Russell 2000 is up 0.66%.

Stocks are mostly higher Monday afternoon as tech underperforms. The ISM Manufacturing Index grew at a slower pace than expected with an April reading of 60.7%, missing estimates for 65.3%. Among the main contributors to the slowed growth were ongoing shortages and supply chain issues, which pulled the indicator back from its March reading of 64.7%.

Sector Highlights

Financial Services stocks dominated our list of highs today with 45 out of the 194 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is outperforming the market, increasing 0.95% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has outperformed the market, increasing 6.21% while the S&P increased 5.29%.

Allstate (ALL) is on highs following after filing for mixed securities shelf offering. Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) is on highs after CEO Warren Buffet stated that his likely successor would be Greg Abel. Meanwhile, CNA Financial (CNA) reached highs despite missing earnings estimates by $0.05 per share and reporting earnings of $0.96 per share.

Consumer Cyclical had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 36 out of 194 highs coming from the Consumer Cyclical sector. The Consumer Cyclical sector is outperforming the market today, decreasing 0.44% so far on the day. Over the last month the Consumer Cyclical sector has outperformed the market, increasing 8.78% while the S&P increased 5.29%.

Berry Global (BERY) stock is on highs ahead of its earnings report tomorrow morning when it is expected to show profits of $1.31 per share for its second quarter. Meanwhile, O-I Glass (OI) is on highs after being upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Barclays, with an increased price target of $17. Lastly, Ross Stores (ROST) was upgraded to Positive from Mixed at OTR Global.
