52-Week Lows Dominate Highs Once Again; Consumer Cyclical Stocks Lead Lows

During trading Thursday, 9 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 178 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is down 0.12% so far today while the Dow is down 0.35%, the Nasdaq is up 0.29%, and the Russell 2000 is down 0.23%.

Stocks are mixed Thursday afternoon as the Fed remains strong on the position to bring down price pressures even at the cost of a potential recession. Recently Fed Governor Michelle Bowman signaled support for another 75 point rate hike in July to be followed by additional 50 basis hikes after that. Volatility remains high in markets as traders weigh whether the economy can withstand three more meetings of at least 50 point rate increases in the central bank's efforts to fight inflation.

Sector Highlights

Financial Services stocks dominated our list of highs today with 3 out of the 9 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is underperforming the market, decreasing 1.83% so far on the day. Over the last month, the Financial Services sector has underperformed the market, decreasing 9.56% while the S&P decreased 5.61%.

Finance stocks have the most highs today with the sector accounting for a third of all highs despite being down nearly 2% Thursday and almost 10% over the last month of trading.

Financial Services: ETAC, GFX, GOAC,

The Consumer Cyclical sector makes up the majority of our 52-week lows, as 37 out of our 178 lows comes from the Consumer Cyclical sector. The Consumer Cyclical sector is outperforming the market today, increasing 0.06% so far on the day. Over the last month, the Consumer Cyclical sector has outperformed the market, decreasing 1.68% while the S&P decreased 5.61%.

Cyclical stocks have the most lows Thursday despite the sector inching higher on the day and performing better than the market over the last month. Cyclical stocks being down over 33% this year though might have something to do with that fact though as the S&P 500 is down "only" 21% during that time.
