128 Stocks Hit New High; Personal Spending Rose 4.2% in March

During trading Friday, 128 stocks traded to a 52-week high, while 11 stocks bottomed out at new 52-week lows. The S&P 500 is down 0.66% so far today while the Dow is down 0.56%, the Nasdaq is down 0.74%, and the Russell 2000 is down 1.23%.

Markets are down Friday as investors took in new economic and inflation data. Personal Income rose 21.1% last month, right in line with expectations. Personal Spending meanwhile increased by 4.2% in March, analysts had expected a 5.0% rise. Core PCE Prices rose more than expected in March at 0.5% compared to the expected 0.3%. Amazon (AMZN) stock is trading higher today after the online retailer surpassed earnings and revenue estimates for its first fiscal quarter of 2021.

Sector Highlights

Financial Services stocks dominated our list of highs today with 30 out of the 128 total stocks that reached their high coming from the Financial Services sector. The Financial Services sector is underperforming the market, decreasing 0.72% so far on the day. Over the last month the Financial Services sector has outperformed the market, increasing 6.24% while the S&P increased 5.96%.

Finance stocks once again have the most highs as the economy recovers and recent statements from the Fed and White House indicating continuing aggresive supportive policies.

Consumer Cyclical had the second largest presence on our 52-week highs, with 21 out of 128 highs coming from the Consumer Cyclical sector. The Consumer Cyclical sector is outperforming the market today, increasing 0.46% so far on the day. Over the last month the Consumer Cyclical sector has outperformed the market, increasing 8.01% while the S&P increased 5.96%.

Cyclical stocks have the second most highs as investors move to the sector with vaccinations administered at a high rate and the economy returning to a new normal.
