Analysts' Thoughts

Walmart has enjoyed a strong start to the current year after taking big losses during the December market correction. Overall economic conditions in the nation remain favorable and consumer confidence has been high. Confidence did waver during the recent government shutdown, but with a new spending bill in place to avoid another shutdown consumer sentiment and confidence is likely to rise again.

Last quarter the company reported mixed numbers with a small revenue miss. The mixed report did not hit the stock too hard, but it did put shares in a vulnerable position when the overall market corrected, and the stock sold off more than it should have. The stock has a reasonable valuation with a forward P/E of 21 and earnings expected to rise 4.2% per annum over the next five years. Walmart has posted better than expected earnings each of the last three quarters and the market is looking for a fourth-straight beat with a whisper number of $1.36 for the quarter. Analysts have an average price target of $107.95 on the stock.
