Analysts' Thoughts

While Wells Fargo and JP Morgan are generally considered to be the stocks that officially launch the earnings season, Citigroup will actually report the night before and set the stage for what to expect. The financial sector is always important to watch, but this earnings season the big bank reports have added weight on them due to the growing concern of a possible global recession on the horizon. Citigroup trended lower during the second half of 2018 along with the overall sector, but it has started to recover as strength has returned to the overall market. Wall Street wants to take a bullish outlook on financials, but in order for bank stocks to build on their recent gains all of the major banks will need to show strength. Citigroup gets its chance to set a positive tone with its quarterly report and the street does expect to see a positive earnings surprise with a whisper number of $1.60 for the quarter. Citigroup has posted mixed numbers the last two quarters with sales falling a bit short in each case, and the mixed results drove the stock lower. Citigroup has to show strength on both the top and bottom line to keep its current momentum, and with a forward P/E of just 7.5 there is a lot of upside potential if it can do that. Analysts have an average price target of $79.89 on the stock, which suggests 40% upside, but to move towards that target there can be no signs of weakness in the its quarterly report and the other big banks also need to help drive the sector higher with their numbers as well.
