Analysts' Thoughts

The financial sector moved sharply higher following last year’s presidential election, and while most banking stocks cooled off during the summer months, enthusiasm has once again returned to the sector. Recent gains are being fueled by hopes of tax reform, and expectations of additional rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve lifted rates once at the end of 2016, and twice in 2017. Higher rates allow banks to widen the spread on money they borrow and money they lend out to customers, with the result being higher interest income that leads to stronger profits. Analysts expect BBT to post earnings of $0.78, but the street has a slightly higher whisper number of $0.79, so that is the number the market will really need to see for shares to make a meaningful move higher.
