Analysts' Thoughts

AXP took a big hit in December as the overall market corrected and the stock traded down close its 52-week low in late December before staging a strong rally that erased nearly half of its December losses. Consumer confidence remains strong, and the holiday shopping numbers were good, so as the overall market rebounded credit card stocks really benefitted. AXP remains a good value, with a forward P/E of 12 and forecast earnings growth of 12.5% per annum over the next five years. The company has a strong earnings track record and the street expects another positive earnings surprise with a whisper number of $1.82 for the quarter. If we see good numbers for AXP’s recent quarter, and the big banks are able to post strong enough numbers to ease concerns over a possible global recession AXP can quickly trade back to its 52-week high set back in late November. Analysts have an average price target of $115.07 on the stock, which is above the stock’s all-time high.
