Morning Update: Stocks rise Tuesday morning

First Look

U.S. stocks are pointed toward a higher open Tuesday morning, although the overnight move still leaves the S&P 500 below Friday’s closing price. Oil prices are on the rise, pushing energy shares higher. Some tech stocks are lower this morning after some analysts downgraded semiconductor names and the founders of Instagram announced they are leaving Facebook (FB) over disagreements with Mark Zuckerberg. The Dow Jones is up 0.25%, the S&P 500 is up 0.21%, the Nasdaq is up 0.14%.

Stocks on the Move

Hess Corp. (HES), TechnipFMC PLC (FTI) and Freeport-McMoRan Inc (FCX) are moving higher this morning, while DIGITAL RLTY TR/SH (DLR), Centurylink Inc (CTL) and IHS Markit Ltd (INFO) are headed lower. Clorox Co (CLX), Workiva Inc (WK) and Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (HP) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Pandora Media Inc (P ), CACI INTERNATIONAL INC Common Stock (CACI) and Microchip Technology Inc. (MCHP) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.96%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.29%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.01% the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.58% and the Hang Seng is down -1.62%. In Europe stocks are up. The FTSE 100 is up 0.53%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.25%, the DAX is up 0.22% and the CAC 40 is up 0.13%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.23 at 72.31 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.63 at 81.83 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.01 at 3.04. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 2.34 at 1201.37 per ounce. Platinum is up 5.4 at 832.6 while silver is up 0.02 at 14.36. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 885,457 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 558,660 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.63 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.59.
