Morning Update: Stocks flat to start week

First Look

Stocks are a few ticks from Friday’s close Monday morning. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He made a surprise appearance at what were expected to be low-level trade talks with the U.S. This set of meetings is supposed to set the table for higher-level talks later in the month. There was no progress on the government shutdown over the weekend, and Congress is not in session today. The Dow Jones is up 0.15%, the S&P 500 is up 0.01%, the Nasdaq is down -0.05%.

Today's market outlook is Neutral

Stocks on the Move

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC), Hologic, Inc. (HOLX) and Dollar Tree, Inc. (DLTR) are moving higher this morning, while PG&E Corporation (PCG), Eli Lilly And Co (LLY) and Skyworks Solutions Inc (SWKS) are headed lower. Lear Corporation (LEA), Five Below Inc (FIVE) and Citigroup Inc (C) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Spotify Technology SA (SPOT), Owens-Illinois Inc (OI) and Bank of America Corp (BAC) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are up. The Nikkei 225 is up 2.44%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 1.19%, the Hang Seng is up 0.8% the Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.72% and the Mumbai Sensex is up 0.51%. Stocks in Europe are down. The CAC 40 is down -0.61%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.58%, the DAX is down -0.57% and the FTSE 100 is down -0.48%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 1.16 at 49.12 per barrel. Brent crude is up 1.28 at 58.34 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.07 at 2.97. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 7.72 at 1293.77 per ounce. Platinum is up 6.24 at 828.94 while silver is up 0.07 at 15.86. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,252,477 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 740,897 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.59 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.74.
