Morning Update: Semiconductors continue to fall

Stocks in the U.S. are lower Friday morning before the bell. Earnings from NVIDIA (NVDA) came in worse than anticipated, dealing another blow to the already reeling Semiconductor industry. PG&E (PCG) is sharply up on news that being found liable for California’s Camp Fire won’t necessarily force the company into bankruptcy. The Dow Jones is down -0.74%, the -0.05 is down -0.86%, the Nasdaq is down -1.44%.

Stocks on the Move

PG&E Corporation (PCG), Edison International (EIX) and Viacom, Inc. Class B (VIAB) are moving higher this morning, while NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN) and Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) are headed lower. IBERIABANK Corp (IBKC), and Cubic Corporation (CUB) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), Michael Kors Holdings Ltd (KORS) and Copa Holdings, S.A. (CPA) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.56%, the Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.41%, the Hang Seng is up 0.31% the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -0.4% and the Nikkei 225 is down -0.57%. Stocks in Europe are down. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.86%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.86%, the FTSE 100 is down -0.8% and the CAC 40 is down -0.77%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 1.2 at 57.66 per barrel. Brent crude is up 1.52 at 68.14 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.06 at 4.1. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 10.29 at 1223.65 per ounce. Platinum is up 2.53 at 844.73 while silver is up 0.05 at 14.31. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 900,049 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 659,941 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.73 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.68.
