Morning Update for October 6, 2017

First Look

Stocks in the U.S. are lower Friday morning after September’s non-farm payroll report showed the economy losing jobs for the first time since 2010. This month’s report is considerably noisier than usual due to the impact fo two hurricanes. The report showed the number of jobs falling by 33,000, with an additional 38,000 coming off of August and July’s numbers gains. The unemployment rate fell to 4.2%, while hourly earnings rose. The Nasdaq is down -0.05%, the Dow Jones is down -0.07%, the S&P 500 is down -0.1%.

Stocks on the Move

Celgene Corporation (CELG), Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN) and Freeport-McMoRan Inc (FCX) are moving higher this morning, while Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST), Lowe's Companies, Inc. (LOW) and People's United Financial, Inc. (PBCT) are headed lower. Credit Suisse Group AG (ADR) (CS), Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (LW) and Kraft Heinz Co (KHC) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (WBA), Valero Energy Corporation (VLO) and Orbital ATK Inc (OA) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are up. The Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 1.04%, the Mumbai Sensex is up 0.7%, the Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.37% the Nikkei 225 is up 0.3% and the Hang Seng is up 0.28%.In Europe stocks are mixed. The FTSE 100 is up 0.16%, the DAX is up 0.09%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.17% and the CAC 40 is down -0.2%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are down today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.98 at 49.81 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.58 at 56.42 per barrel. Natural Gas is down -0.02 at 2.91. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -0.48 at 1267.74 per ounce. Platinum is down -0.17 at 915.08 while silver is down -0.02 at 16.61. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and up against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 818,779 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 563,503 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.69 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.63.
