Morning Update for May 17, 2017

First Look

Stocks in the U.S. are pointed lower, following their counterparts around the world ahead of the open Wednesday as the number of controversies surrounding the Trump Administration continues to grow. Gold and the Yen, both considered safe-haven assets are higher this morning. Oil is off its recent highs, despite a broadly weakening dollar, but is gaining since yesterday’s close. The Nasdaq is down -0.37%, the Dow Jones is down -0.4%, the S&P 500 is down -0.42%.

Stocks on the Move

Target Corporation (TGT), Colgate-Palmolive Company (CL) and DISH Network Corp (DISH) are moving higher this morning, while NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), Bank of America Corp (BAC) and AbbVie Inc (ABBV) are headed lower. Clovis Oncology Inc (CLVS), TJX Companies Inc (TJX) and ConocoPhillips (COP) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Plug Power Inc (PLUG), Stratasys, Ltd. (SSYS) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.25%, the Hang Seng is down -0.17%, the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -0.27% the Nikkei 225 is down -0.53% and the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is down -1.04%.Stocks in Europe are down. The CAC 40 is down -0.46%, the Euronext 100 is down -0.4%, the DAX is down -0.34% and the FTSE 100 is down -0.11%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are up today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up 0.29 at 48.95 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.4 at 52.05 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.04 at 3.27. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 11.85 at 1249.09 per ounce. Platinum is up 0.56 at 941.92 while silver is up 0.19 at 16.94. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,138,431 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 616,836 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.54 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.64.
