Morning Update for January 12, 2018

First Look

Major U.S. equity indices are pointed higher Friday. West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down a bit this morning after a bug runup of the last several weeks. The Euro is higher on news that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reached a deal with an opposition party that will allow her to break political gridlock and serve a fourth term. JP Morgan reported this morning that it beat earnings estimates, but missed on the revenue line. The Dow Jones is up 0.37%, the S&P 500 is up 0.14%, the Nasdaq is up 0.12%.

Stocks on the Move

Kohl's Corporation (KSS), A. O. Smith Corp (AOS) and SunTrust Banks, Inc. (STI) are moving higher this morning, while Facebook Inc (FB), Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (VAR) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) are headed lower. eBay Inc (EBAY), FuelCell Energy Inc (FCEL) and Magna International Inc. (USA) (MGA) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while KB Home (KBH), Etsy Inc (ETSY) and Domtar Corp (USA) (UFS) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Hang Seng is up 0.94%, the Mumbai Sensex is up 0.26%, the Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 0.1% the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.01% and the Nikkei 225 is down -0.24%.In Europe stocks are mixed. The FTSE 100 is up 0.19%, the FTSE 100 is up 0.19%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.18% and the DAX is down -0.06%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.53 at 63.27 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.42 at 68.84 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.05 at 3.13. Precious metals are up this morning. Gold is up 10.11 at 1332.55 per ounce. Platinum is up 11.07 at 995.75 while silver is up 0.18 at 17.15. The dollar is down compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, down against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,252,912 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 622,089 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.496514519774733 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.56.
