Morning Update for April 16, 2018

First Look

Markets seem to be unfazed Monday morning by Friday evenings missile strikes in Syria. Stocks in the U.S. are pointed higher, while gold and oil are lower. Earnings season resumes this afternoon with Netflix (NFLX) among the notable reporters. The Nasdaq is up 0.61%, the Dow Jones is up 0.6%, the S&P 500 is up 0.58%.

Today's market outlook is Neutral

The drill instructor must have total and complete control. Mindless obedience is what he's after.

Stocks on the Move

Tractor Supply Company (TSCO), Ulta Beauty Inc (ULTA) and Centurylink Inc (CTL) are moving higher this morning, while National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NOV), M&T Bank Corporation (MTB) and J M Smucker Co (SJM) are headed lower. Tractor Supply Company (TSCO), Ulta Beauty Inc (ULTA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Monsanto Company (MON), McDonald's Corporation (MCD) and Kraft Heinz Co (KHC) were downgraded.

International Markets

Stocks in Asia are mixed. The Mumbai Sensex is up 0.33%, the Nikkei 225 is up 0.26%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.14% the Shanghai SE Composite Index is down -1.53% and the Hang Seng is down -1.6%.Stocks in Europe are down. The FTSE 100 is down -0.5%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.18%, the DAX is down -0.15% and the CAC 40 is down -0.14%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.83 at 66.56 per barrel. Brent crude is down -0.85 at 71.73 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.02 at 2.75. Precious metals are down this morning. Gold is down -2.31 at 1343.89 per ounce. Platinum is down -2.13 at 929.2 while silver is down -0.04 at 16.62. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,050,072 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 696,700 put contracts. The single-session put/call was 0.66 while the 20-day moving average is now at 0.67.
