U. S. stocks point up


U.S. stocks are rising today as energy shares strengthen on rising oil prices. The S&P is up 0.68%, and the Dow is up 0.52%. There were 294,000 initial claims for unemployment in the week of May 7, up from 274,000 the prior week

In Asia, stocks were mixed Thursday with strong earnings results lifting some markets. The Nikkei was up 0.41% while the Hang Seng was down 0.04%.

European stocks are climbing today as oil prices swing higher. The FTSE is up 0.44%, while the DAX is up 0.55%.   

Energy futures are mixed this morning. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is up $0.61 to $46.84 per barrel, while natural gas is down less than a cent to $2.17. Metals prices are falling today. Gold is down $6.60 to $1,268.90 per ounce and platinum is down $9.80 to $1,056.30. The Dollar is down versus the Euro and the Yen.

Monsanto Company(MON), Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT), and SolarCity Corporation (SCTY) are early risers, while AEGON N.V. (AEG), YY Inc.(YY) and Kohl’s Corp. (KSS) are down. [InvestorsKeyhole, news and data sources]
