Stocks advance slowly

Major indices are slightly higher this Monday morning. Oil has changed little from this time on Friday. Bitcoin’s extraordinary run continues, with the cryptocurrency now trading at $8,262. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) is up 5.1% at this hour, and Square (SQ) is up 2.35%.

West Texas Intermediate crude is trading at $56.07. At present, the S&P 500 is up 0.06%, the DJIA is up 0.26%, and the NASDAQ is up 0.15%.

Industries doing well today include auto components, communications equipment, and construction materials. Industries showing weakness include biotechnology, food & staples retailing, and pharmaceuticals. The VIX is down 2.3% to 11.17 after closing on Friday at 11.43. The most heavily traded options this morning are for the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), with 5,106 December-15 23 calls on the board. The total put/call ratio as of 10:00 AM was 0.84 (247,721/208,091). The advancers/decliners ratio for NYSE stocks is 1,324/1,451 while the advancers/decliners ratio for NASDAQ stocks is 1,481/1,254.
