Steady as she goes


Stocks continued their slow, steady rise this Tuesday morning. Oil prices are not much changed over the last 24 hours. Sprint (S) is up 6% this morning after reporting a profit for the first time in three years and adding 88,000 subscribers in the second quarter. Shopify (SHOP) is up 10% after posting a loss of one cent per share in the second quarter, which was considerably better than the Street was expecting.

West Texas Intermediate crude is trading at $49.56. At present, the S&P 500 is up 0.17%, the DJIA is up 0.29%, and the NASDAQ is up 0.14%.

Here are your Tuesday morning market metrics. Industries doing well today include airlines, internet/catalog retail, and banks. Industries showing weakness include automobiles, auto components, and electrical equipment. The VIX is up 1% to 10.36 after closing on Monday at 10.26. The most heavily traded options this morning are for the PowerShares QQQ ETF, (QQQ), with 10,010 October-20 140 puts and 10,010 October-20 130 puts on the board. The total put/call ratio as of 10:00 AM was 0.81 (301,181/243,734). The advancers/decliners ratio for the NYSE is 1,577/1,240 and for the NASDAQ 1,322/1,372.
