Slowly but surely

Stocks are slightly higher today on the first market trading day for the new Bitcoin futures on the CBOE. These are cash-settled products, which means they won’t affect Bitcoins directly, but they could affect Bitcoin prices indirectly. SunPower (SPWR) is up 15% today, though the reason why is not entirely clear, and CenturyLink (CTL) is up 6.1% after landing a contract with Pennsylvania.

At present, the S&P 500 is up 0.19%, the DJIA is up 0.21%, and the NASDAQ is up 0.3%. West Texas Intermediate crude is trading at $57.45. Bitcoin is at $16,120 on Bitstamp.

Industries doing well today include leisure products, energy equipment, and independent power. Industries showing weakness include construction materials, household products, and food products. The VIX is up 1% to 9.68 after closing on Friday at 10.58. The most heavily traded options this morning are for the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), with 10,980 December-29 263 puts on the board. The total put/call ratio as of 10:00 AM was 1.07 (255,718/220,290). The advancers/decliners ratio for NYSE stocks is 1,732/1,115 while the advancers/decliners ratio for NASDAQ stocks is 1,621/1,149.
