Analysts' Thoughts

We have seen strength return to the financial sector over the last month, and with multiple big names in the sector already posting better than expected results this earnings season, the sector should continue to build on recent gains. Citigroup (C), Wells Fargo (WFC) and JP Morgan (JPM) have all posted better than expected earnings, and the sector has rallied in response. While earnings have been better than expected, exposure in the energy sector has resulted in year over year profit drops. Low energy prices have hurt banks with loan exposure in the sector, and as long as oil prices remain weak that exposure will continue to weigh on the financials. The good news is that oil has started to recover, and so far earnings have been above expectations. I expect Goldman to follow the other major financials and post earnings in-line or slightly higher than the consensus. The consensus calls for earnings of $2.57 per share, but the street’s whisper is significantly higher at $2.81. The strong whisper number is a good indicator that results should be come in higher than the consensus, but actual results will need to be closer to the whisper number for the stock to enjoy a big post-earnings jump.
