Stocks tend to be the most volatile around earnings season, when a good or bad report can make or break it. However, a good or even great earnings report doesn't necessarily translate into a huge pop for a stock.

Intel (INTC) is a great example, as the chip giant recently crushed EPS estimates, beat on the top line, recorded record gross margins, and offered strong guidance, yet the stock still fell. Conversely, a seemingly poor earnings report doesn't necessarily mean a stock will plunge, or even go down for that matter.

Sometimes there is another, more pressing event on the horizon taking the focus off of earnings. This was the case back in January when Apple (AAPL) reported its first quarter 2010 results.

Analysts were not sure how a change in accounting rules would affect revenues and thus earnings for the quarter. The change meant the company could stop recognizing revenue for its iPhone sales over a two-year period (the length of a standard wireless contract), and, instead recognize it as soon as a phone was sold.

In the past week, we have made two moves in the Conservative Covered Call Plus portfolio. First, we exited a TRV hedged position and locked in a $1,350 profit. Then we placed a follow-on trade that brought in $500 on our GME position. Expiration is this Friday and both our two covered calls and our two hedged trades are looking pretty solid right now. This service points out a series of covered call trades along with a companion series of hedged trades using the same underlying stocks requiring much less capital. These are hedged investments so returns are protected even if the stock drops in price. Get a rebate if you sign up for this service today.
