| Schaeffer on Charts: RUT in a Rut? |
|
Russell 2000 Index runs into resistance at 500 level
 |
Bernie
Schaeffer Schaeffer’s
Investment Research Inc. |

 |
The accompanying daily chart shows the Russell 2000 Index (RUT) rally has stalled shy of its declining 200-day moving average. And then there's that pesky round-number resistance at the 500 level, as illustrated by the intraday chart.
Not surprisingly, this RUT stall has accompanied a reversal in the sharp rally since March of the small- and mid-cap space compared to the larger caps. The most immediate obstacles for the market right now are these RUT resistance levels, as the S&P and the Dow aren't going anywhere without the RUT stepping in line.
I'd also note that implied volatility for options on the RUT-based IWM exchange-traded fund is quite high these days as compared to large-cap index volatility in the form of SPY options. This suggests that astute options traders can construct some profitable trades around selling IWM volatility and buying SPY volatility.
